This report outlines the findings of the first piece of research carried out on crime in Northern Ireland from the perspective of older people and those supporting them. The research sought to understand the experience of an older person throughout each stage in the process, from reporting a crime through to the investigation, prosecution and sentencing.
This study consisted of focus groups and interviews with older people in Northern Ireland as well as with the Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI), Public Prosecution Service (PPS) and Victim Support NI. It examined the impact of crime, not just on the older victims but their families too, as well the response of the criminal justice system.
